talks i've done
from big hotties like LEGO to smaller creative organisations like CLIP...
creative workshop
for LEGO

The talk; to give a lesson in meme-ing and help LEGO’S creative department get into the mind of gen-z

I literally got the team to come up with the best-worst gen-z memes of all time (the absolute best-worst was one called ‘send me your brick pics’)
"I highly recommend Carolyn for copywriting talks. She brings inspiration, joy and a whole load of wonderful weirdness."
Natalie Barnes- Lego's Head of Tone of Voice

"Carolyn honestly made my week with her presentation. I know everybody will agree with me on that! Utterly hilarious, honest, vulnerable, strong, witty, clever... Thank you so much. Can't wait to see what she does next!"
Sam Varnham - Lego's Community
Engagement Manager

keynote on community
for CLIP

The talk; deliver a keynote speech on community building,
and how to connect with GEN-Z
This was a super fun keynote to deliver where I was able to pull on my experiences of building up Word Tonic from scratch (it was also kinda fun to roast all the agencies sitting in the room when they asked me…”so what do you think we can do better?”
But seriously? It was super helpful to finally share all the thoughts that so many members in my community share with me on a regular basis - especially the fact that job applications ARE NOT entry level, and that agencies need to be doing more to recruit and retain ‘rough diamonds (young people that may not look good on paper- no degrees, etc - but have a lot of potential)
live copywriting panel with First Choice (TUI)

The talk; lead a panel and networking event on copywriting for young people
When TUI reached out to say they’d be sponsoring this networking event, I was STOKED. I LOVE LOVE putting together IRL events where young wannabe writers can get together, chat and learn something.
BUT it needed to be weird. It needed to be Word Tonic coded. And it needed to be totally me- there was no way I was gonna lead an event and talk, if I couldn’t be me - that meant swearing, weird jokes, the lot.
TUI agreed.
So…it became.
The most insane copywriting networking event, ever.
It was AMAZING.

I shared my story into copywriting with the audience (even the weird parts, like that time my ex tried to get with my mum).

I facilitated a panel of 5 amazing young copywriters (all from Word Tonic) to answer questions from the audience.

There was a hamster on stage.
There was a wedding proposal.
Honestly, I’m not gonna say much more. You can find out yourself.
BUT the end result was terrific. Everyone was laughing. I had so many young people come up to me afterwards to tell me that they felt ‘seen.’ That it helped them realise they could be themselves- they didn’t need to tone down their personalities.
SIde-note; this is one thing you brands have to try grasp. You might look at an event like this and think WHATTTTTT!!! But it helps make the industry more accessible and open to young people. You have to realise that most of us aren’t told about this career at school. And then when we DO find out about it, it feels like this big scary mountain we can’t tackle and everyone’s wearing suits and talking BIG on LinkedIn.
So yes, when you do an event like this where the speaker is wearing thigh high boots, making jokes about dick pics and mentioning that one time her ex tried to get with her mum- it’s relatable. It’s less scary. It feels like…if she can do it and be herself and be THAT crazy? I can too.

OH and all the young people that came to the talk loved it so much they wrote linkedin posts about it!
